When parents look for the best math program for their child, they often encounter the term “Singapore Math.” But what exactly is Singapore Math, and why has this approach become so highly regarded?

Singapore Math is much more than a set of textbooks or a different way of teaching arithmetic. It is an approach to mathematics education that emphasizes deep conceptual understanding, strong number sense, visual thinking, and problem-solving. Instead of teaching children simply to memorize procedures, Singapore Math helps them understand why mathematics works.

What Is Singapore Math?

Singapore Math refers to a mathematics teaching approach based on the curriculum developed in Singapore, where mathematical problem-solving and the development of strong conceptual understanding are central to the national mathematics framework. The method became internationally recognized in part because of Singaporean students’ consistently strong performance on international mathematics assessments .

One of the defining characteristics of Singapore Math is its emphasis on mastery. Concepts are introduced deliberately and explored in depth before students move on to more advanced material.

Rather than covering a large number of topics superficially, students build a strong understanding of fundamental mathematical concepts and learn how those concepts connect.

This creates a foundation that becomes increasingly valuable as children progress from elementary arithmetic to fractions, ratios, percentages, algebra, geometry, and higher-level mathematics.

1. Singapore Math Focuses on Understanding, Not Just Memorization

Many adults remember learning math as a collection of rules:

“Carry the one.”

“Borrow from the tens column.”

“Flip the second fraction and multiply.”

These procedures can produce correct answers, but knowing a procedure is not necessarily the same as understanding the mathematics behind it.

Singapore Math places much greater emphasis on conceptual understanding.

Students are encouraged to understand quantities, relationships, and operations before relying on formulas or algorithms. They learn not only how to solve a problem, but why a particular strategy works.

Instead of thinking, “Which formula am I supposed to use?” a student with strong conceptual foundations can ask, “What is happening mathematically, and how can I represent it?”

2. The Concrete-Pictorial-Abstract Approach Makes Math Meaningful

One of the best-known features of Singapore Math is the Concrete-Pictorial-Abstract, or CPA, progression.

Children move through three stages of understanding.

Concrete

Students first explore a concept using physical objects or manipulatives. For example, they might use counters, blocks, number bonds, or other hands-on materials to understand addition and subtraction.

Pictorial

Next, students represent the same mathematical idea visually using diagrams, models, or drawings.

Abstract

Finally, students connect that understanding to mathematical symbols and equations.

For example, instead of immediately teaching a young child that:

8 + 5 = 13

a Singapore Math lesson might first help the child physically or visually decompose 5 into 2 and 3, use 2 to make 10, and then recognize:

8 + 2 + 3 = 13

The child isn’t merely memorizing that 8 + 5 equals 13. The child is developing an understanding of how numbers relate to one another.

Over time, this type of thinking contributes to stronger mental math and greater flexibility with numbers.

3. Singapore Math Develops Strong Number Sense

Strong math students don’t simply calculate. They understand numbers. Number sense includes recognizing relationships between quantities, estimating, decomposing numbers, identifying efficient strategies, and determining whether an answer is reasonable.

Consider a problem such as:

49 + 27

A child who relies exclusively on a standard algorithm may immediately stack the numbers vertically and begin calculating.

A child with strong number sense might recognize that 49 is only one away from 50 and reason:

50 + 27 = 77
77 – 1 = 76

Both approaches produce the same answer. But the second demonstrates flexibility and an understanding of numerical relationships.

Singapore Math deliberately develops this kind of thinking from an early age.

And number sense becomes increasingly important as students progress into fractions, decimals, percentages, ratios, and algebra.

4. Bar Modeling Turns Word Problems Into Visual Problems

One of the most distinctive Singapore Math strategies is the bar model.

Word problems can be challenging because children must translate language into mathematical relationships. Bar modeling gives them a visual tool for doing exactly that.

Instead of immediately searching for keywords that supposedly indicate whether they should add, subtract, multiply, or divide, students represent the quantities and their relationships using rectangular bars.

This can help children determine:

  • what information they know
  • what information is missing
  • how different quantities relate to each other
  • which mathematical operation or sequence of operations makes sense

As problems become more sophisticated, bar models can be used to represent fractions, ratios, percentages, comparisons, and multi-step relationships.

This visual problem-solving experience can also help prepare students for algebraic thinking because they become accustomed to representing unknown quantities and relationships before formally working with variables.

5. Singapore Math Teaches Children to Solve Problems, Not Recognize Templates

A common challenge in mathematics education occurs when students become very good at solving problems they recognize but struggle when the format changes.

They may know exactly what to do on a worksheet containing 20 nearly identical questions, yet become stuck when presented with a novel word problem.

Singapore Math places problem-solving at the center of mathematics instruction.

Students learn to analyze problems, choose strategies, represent information visually, and consider different approaches.

The objective isn’t simply:

“Can you calculate the answer?”

It is also:

“Can you figure out how to approach the problem?”

That distinction is particularly important for students who will eventually encounter advanced mathematics, competitive math, STEM coursework, and other subjects requiring analytical reasoning.

6. Mental Math Becomes a Tool, Not a Trick

Parents are often impressed when children can calculate quickly in their heads. But effective mental math is not simply about speed.

It reflects an understanding of number structure.

Singapore Math teaches students to break numbers apart, regroup them, make tens or hundreds, and choose efficient strategies depending on the problem.

For example:

398 + 247

A flexible thinker might reason:

400 + 247 = 647
647 – 2 = 645

The goal isn’t to replace written calculation. Students still need computational fluency and accurate algorithms.

Instead, mental math gives them another tool and helps them become more comfortable manipulating numbers.

7. Mastery Creates a Stronger Foundation for Advanced Math

Mathematics is cumulative.

Difficulty with fractions can become difficulty with ratios. Weak understanding of ratios can create problems with proportions. Gaps in arithmetic and number sense can eventually make algebra considerably harder.

This is one reason the mastery orientation of Singapore Math is so valuable.

Students build each new concept on previously established knowledge. Instead of racing ahead simply because a topic appears on a grade-level checklist, the emphasis is on developing the foundation needed for what comes next.

For academically advanced students, this doesn’t necessarily mean moving slowly.

In fact, a strong foundation can make acceleration more meaningful because students are advancing with genuine understanding rather than accumulating gaps that may cause problems later.
